Look at the New (Soon to
be Official) Champion
Bald Cypress!
When it is official, it will
also be the largest tree in Texas!
It is at Criders Camp off Hwy 83, on a stream off from the Frio River.
My son Bain Walker is on the ground, our friend Lee Haile is in the tree.
Bain & Lee found some really Big trees on the Detering Ranch, this past
April at our Nature Quest event.
They went out with some TX Forestry Service guys yesterday Oct.3rd, to
measure the trees.
They searched the whole ranch to be sure these were the largest ones there.
They found & measured 5 or 6 really big trees there.
Some may be new champions, others may be new co-champions.
After all the measurements are checked against the current champs we will
know for sure.
If these are champs Bain & Lee will be the nominators of these trees, and
will be recognized as such.
When the new Registry of Big Trees is published, their names will be in it
as the nominators.
This is very exciting news for Nature tourism in our area.
This will certainly add to the Big Tree Tour for Nature Quest!
The Forestry men trained Bain to measure any trees that people want checked.
So if you find a really big tree that you think might be a champion in our
area call Bain to come measure it.
He will let the Forest Service know if it measures larger than what he has
on record. Then they will come out to do the official measurements.
Will let y'all know how big these are when we find out for sure!
